In Eastern philosophy, it is said: “Satsang se utsang”—the company you keep determines the quality of your mind and the direction of your life. The Bhagavad Gita calls it satsanga—the association with the wise and virtuous—which purifies the heart and aligns it with dharma.
Just as a lotus blooms unstained in muddy water by turning toward the sun, so too the soul blossoms when it turns toward uplifting influences.
Sri Ramakrishna shared a simple story:
A man kept a bottle of perfume in his pocket for many days. Even after it was empty, the fragrance lingered on the cloth. In the same way, when you spend time with noble-hearted people, their goodness seeps into you—quietly, naturally, and lastingly. But if you remain among the negative, their energy too will rub off on you.
Yogananda echoed this truth, urging seekers to “seek those who see the Divine in you.” In their presence, you unconsciously adopt the habits of higher thought, deeper compassion, and inner joy.
Choose your circle like a gardener choosing seeds—for whatever you plant will grow within you.
