A monk once asked his master why his heart felt restless even in peaceful surroundings. The master handed him a bowl of still water and said, “Look at your reflection.” As the monk gazed in, the master dropped a pebble into the bowl. Ripples instantly distorted the image.

“This,” the master explained, “is your mind. One small thought of anger or fear can disturb its calm. But if you wait and let the ripples settle, the reflection returns.”

Our mind is like that clear pond—just one pebble of negativity can ripple through and disturb its serenity. Eastern wisdom teaches that awareness is the key: observe your thoughts as they arise, without clinging to them. Osho once said, “A thought is like a cloud; let it pass and the sky of your mind remains clear.” Sri Sri Ravi Shankar reminds us to “tend the garden of the mind daily,” pulling out weeds before they grow.

By consciously planting seeds of gratitude, compassion, and joy, we choose the fragrance we live in. Remember—your day is not shaped by what happens to you, but by the thoughts you nurture and the emotions you water. Keep the pond clear, and life will reflect its beauty back to you.
