These Challenging Times

I graduated in 1982, during a deep recession—much like the one many face today.
My degree seemed to lose its shine overnight.
Friends who had skipped college were already employed, some even homeowners.
Me? I was jobless, in debt, and deeply disillusioned.

At first, I didn’t handle it well.
The carefree student lifestyle continued… so did the partying.
I sent out the same cover letter and résumé to dozens of companies, hoping something would click.
It didn’t.
Rejection after rejection broke my spirit.

Eventually, I hit bottom—and that’s when things began to change.

I took the first job I could find: building display booths for a local artist.
It was humbling, but it was work.
I also added exercise to my routine and noticed how much it lifted my mood.

From there, I built a daily rhythm:
4 hours of job search
4 hours of self-improvement—working out, reading, taking courses

I abandoned the shotgun résumé approach.
Instead, I got a Chamber of Commerce directory, identified company leaders by name, and called them directly.
I didn’t ask for a job—I asked how I could help.
After every meeting, I sent a thank-you note and followed up.

Two months later, I landed a role as Acting Production Supervisor at an insulation company.

The offer came with conditions:
Prove myself within 6 months or lose the job
Start at a lower pay scale with a performance incentive

I accepted.

I spent the first few weeks working side-by-side with the crew on the shop floor.
I was slow, clumsy—but I earned their respect.
I stayed late, learned fast, and when the time came—I delivered.

That job became the foundation of a career I’m proud of.

What I Learned
Even in dark moments, never give up.
You may not control the economy—but you do control your effort, mindset, and resilience.

Life gives answers in three ways:
• YES — and gives you what you want.
• NO — and gives you something better.
• WAIT — and gives you the best.

So if you’re struggling right now, know this:
Don’t just dream—live your dream.
Keep moving. Even a small step forward is a step closer.
Stay persistent. Stay positive.
Your breakthrough might be just one conversation away.
