On this International Day of Peace, let us pause and reflect on a profound paradox: humanity has learned to conquer mountains, cross oceans, split the atom, and explore space - yet many of us still struggle to make peace with our neighbours, our families, and even ourselves.

There is an old story from the aftermath of a great battle. As soldiers walked across a field scarred by conflict, a child asked, “Who won?” An elderly survivor looked at the shattered landscape and replied, “If this is victory, then everyone lost.”

History is filled with wars fought over land, power, ideology, and identity. Yet every conflict leaves behind the same silent witnesses - grieving mothers, empty homes, broken dreams, and generations carrying invisible wounds. Peace is not merely the absence of war; it is the presence of understanding, compassion, and respect for the dignity of every human being.

The wisdom traditions of the world converge on this truth. The Upanishads pray, “Om Shanti, Shanti, Shanti” - peace within, peace around, peace everywhere. Confucius taught that harmony in society begins with harmony in the individual. Immanuel Kant envisioned a world built on reason and lasting peace among nations. Einstein, who witnessed the destructive power of human conflict, reminded us that peace cannot be kept by force; it can only be achieved through understanding.

Perhaps the greatest battlefield is not between nations but within the human heart - between fear and trust, anger and forgiveness, ego and empathy. Every act of kindness, every moment of restraint, every effort to understand rather than judge becomes a small but powerful contribution to world peace.

Reflection: Peace is not someone else’s responsibility. It begins with the thoughts we nurture, the words we speak, and the compassion we extend to others. The world becomes peaceful when enough hearts choose peace over division.Top of Form
