Morning Muse 419 : The Mind's Favourite Trap

The mind often traps us between yesterday's regrets and tomorrow's fears, making it difficult to experience the peace available in the present moment. When we let go of anger, anxiety, and the stories we keep replaying, we discover the quiet joy that has been with us all along.

The human mind has a peculiar habit. Give it ten compliments and one criticism, and it will ignore the ten compliments while replaying the single criticism over and over again. It tends to magnify what is wrong while overlooking what is right.

The mind also rarely stays in the present. It wanders either into the past or the future. In the past, it finds reasons for anger, regret, and resentment. In the future, it creates anxiety, fear, and uncertainty.

Consider a simple example. A glass slips from your hand and shatters on the floor. The moment it breaks, the event is already over. Yet the mind continues to protest, "This should not have happened." But what has happened cannot be undone. Anger arises only after the event, making it not only painful but largely unproductive.

Similarly, anxiety is a projection into an imagined future. How many times have we worried about tomorrow, only to discover later that our fears never materialized—or were far less serious than we had imagined? Looking back, much of our anxiety seems unnecessary, just as much of our anger appears futile.

A wise teacher once asked his students to carry a heavy stone for a day. By evening, everyone complained of exhaustion. The teacher smiled and said, "The weight of the stone is not the problem. The problem is how long you choose to carry it." Anger and anxiety are much the same.

Life unfolds in the present moment. When we stop carrying the burdens of yesterday and tomorrow, the mind naturally becomes lighter. In that space, joy, peace, and love arise effortlessly.

Reflection:

The past cannot be changed, and the future cannot be controlled. Peace begins when we stop resisting what has passed and stop fearing what has not yet arrived.
