Shaheed Udham Singh’s life was shaped forever by the horrific Jallianwala Bagh massacre of 1919, where hundreds of innocent Indians were killed under brutal colonial repression. As a young man witnessing the tragedy and suffering around him, he carried that wound silently within his heart for years.
But his response was not born merely out of anger, it was born from a profound longing for justice and freedom for his people.
For over two decades, Udham Singh waited patiently, carrying within him the memory of those innocent lives lost. In 1940, in London, he assassinated Michael O’Dwyer, the former Lieutenant Governor of Punjab, who had supported the massacre. Knowing fully the consequences of his action, Udham Singh accepted death fearlessly and was executed on 31st July 1940.
What makes his story extraordinary is not only his courage, but also his spirit of unity. He adopted the name Ram Mohammad Singh Azad, symbolizing harmony among Hindu, Muslim, Sikh, and all communities united in the struggle for India’s freedom.
A freedom fighter once remarked,
