The stories of the Guru and his disciples teach that true nourishment, grace, and wisdom are given equally, but comparison and attachment to outer appearances create dissatisfaction in the mind. Guru Purnima is a time to express gratitude for the guidance, protection, and higher wisdom that quietly shapes our lives. The deeper spiritual journey begins when we move beyond comparison and develop awareness of the Guru’s presence, wisdom, and grace within ourselves and all around us.

A wise Master once had three disciples who constantly compared themselves with one another. Each believed the Guru loved the others more.
One day, the Master asked them to enter a room one by one and drink a glass of milk placed there.
The first disciple entered and saw three cups, one gold, one silver, and one steel, all filled with fresh milk. Delighted, he chose the golden cup and left satisfied.
The second disciple found the golden cup empty. Slightly disappointed, he drank from the silver cup and returned.
The third disciple entered to find only the steel cup remaining. Feeling neglected, he quietly drank the milk and came out saddened.
When the Master asked about their experiences, each spoke honestly. The Guru smiled gently and said,
“Did you notice that the milk in all three cups was exactly the same?”
The lesson was simple yet profound, the nourishment was equal, but the restless mind remained trapped in comparison and appearances.
Another story is told of a Guru who gave each disciple a banana and instructed them to eat it where no one could see them.
Two disciples quickly found hiding places and returned after eating. But the third came back holding the untouched banana.
“Why did you not eat it?” asked the Master.
The disciple bowed and replied,
“Master, wherever I went, I felt your presence. There was no place where I was truly alone.”
The Guru smiled in silence.
Guru Purnima is not merely a ritual or celebration. It is a moment of gratitude, a reminder to reflect upon the guidance, wisdom, and unseen grace that quietly nourishes our lives. It reminds us to move beyond comparison and deepen our trust in the higher intelligence guiding our journey.
A true Guru does not merely give knowledge. A Guru awakens awareness, humility, faith, and the ability to see beyond the surface of life.
