Morning Muse 350 : The Quiet Power of a Great Coach

A great coach is someone who listens deeply, believes in a person’s potential, and helps them overcome self-doubt, limiting beliefs, and learned negativity. More than teaching skills, a true coach guides through experience, encouragement, respect, and example, helping individuals discover strengths they may not see in themselves. Like legendary mentors who shaped great achievers, a coach’s real success lies in helping others grow into the best version of themselves.

When young Sachin Tendulkar once played a poor shot during practice, his coach Ramakant Achrekar did not scold him harshly. Instead, he quietly placed a one-rupee coin on the stumps and told the bowlers,
“If you dismiss him, the coin is yours. If he remains unbeaten, the coin belongs to him.”

Sachin treasured those coins for life.

That is the mark of a great coach, someone who sees potential even before the student fully sees it in themselves.

A true coach is not merely a teacher of skills. They are a guide, listener, motivator, and mirror. They help people discover strengths hidden beneath fear, self-doubt, or past conditioning.

Many individuals carry invisible scars from words spoken years ago, “You are not good enough,” “You will never succeed,” or “You cannot do this.” Over time, such thoughts become beliefs. A great coach gently helps break those limiting narratives and replaces them with confidence, clarity, and possibility.

But coaching is not about giving endless advice. It is about listening deeply, not only to what is spoken, but also to what remains unspoken. Sometimes a person needs encouragement more than instruction. Sometimes they need someone to believe in them until they learn to believe in themselves.

A good coach also leads through example. They continue learning, growing, and improving themselves. They do not judge failures but transform them into lessons.

Like a sculptor chiselling away stone to reveal the statue within, a coach helps uncover the best version of a person.

And perhaps most importantly, a great coach walks beside you, celebrating your progress, challenging your excuses, and reminding you of your potential when you forget it yourself.

The world remembers legends not only for their talent, but often for the mentors who shaped their journey.

Reflection
