Morning Muse 329 : The Humility of Greatness

True greatness is reflected in humility, not position or authority. Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam showed that real leadership lies in serving others without ego, even in the simplest roles. It is our character, not our title, that defines who we truly are.

There are moments in life when greatness does not announce itself, it quietly reveals itself.

This was in the late 1990s, when a crucial phase of India’s space program was underway, guarded with utmost secrecy. A helicopter carrying critical equipment and a small, approved team was set to take off. Every name on board had been cleared at the highest level, no changes allowed.

Just before departure, a soft-spoken man with long grey hair approached the crew. He had missed his flight and requested to be taken along, saying he was needed at the launch site. The request was declined, rules were rules.

Moments later, he returned with authorization. One of the sweepers on the manifest had been replaced, with him. Reluctantly, he was allowed onboard.

At the next halt, as the crew rested with tea, they noticed something unusual. The same man was quietly sweeping and cleaning the floor of the helicopter. Some scientists nearby rushed toward him, urging him to stop. Their concern was evident.

Only then did the truth emerge. The man holding the broom was none other than Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, the Project Director. When requested to stop, he simply smiled and said, “I am here in the capacity of a sweeper. Let me do my duty.” And he continued.

No display of authority. No assertion of position. Just a quiet dignity in doing what was needed in that moment. Years later, as President of India, he carried the same simplicity. Titles had changed, but the person had not.

That is the rarest kind of greatness, the kind that does not rise above others, but stands effortlessly among them. Because true leadership is not about being served. It is about serving, without identity, without ego. And perhaps that is why some people are not just remembered for what they achieved, but for how they lived.

Reflection:
Do my actions reflect my position or my character?
