Morning Muse 314 : The Unchanging Within
Ego has both creative and destructive aspects, and awareness of it helps us use it wisely rather than be controlled by it. Amidst all the changes in body, mind, and emotions, there exists an unchanging Self, the silent witness within. Spirituality is the journey of recognizing this Self and bringing balance and clarity to all levels of our existence.

There is something within us that creates, aspires, and expresses and we often call it ego. It has two faces. One fuels creativity, ambition, and individuality. The other isolates, reacts, and turns small disturbances into stress and sorrow.
The problem is not ego itself, but our unawareness of it.
When ego is unconscious, it builds walls, misunderstandings grow, communication breaks, and we feel separate. But when seen clearly, it becomes a tool rather than a burden.
Beyond all this lies something deeper, the Self.
Call it spirit, consciousness, or simply awareness, it is that part of you which does not change. Everything else does. The body ages, thoughts shift, emotions rise and fall, circumstances keep evolving. Yet, amidst all this movement, there is a quiet presence within that simply observes.
Have you ever looked at an old photograph of yourself? The face has changed, the life around it has changed, but the sense of “I” remains strangely familiar. That unchanging sense is a glimpse of the Self.
A teacher once said, “Life is like a river, everything flows, yet something within you stands on the bank, watching.” That witness is your true nature.
Even a brief moment of touching that space, through stillness, through meditation, brings a different kind of energy. Not excitement, but a deep, steady aliveness.
Spirituality, then, is not about escaping life. It is about refining it, nurturing the body, calming the mind, softening the ego, and ultimately resting in the Self.
For when you know that unchanging within, change outside no longer unsettles you.
Reflection:
Am I identified with what is constantly changing, or am I aware of the one who is noticing the change?
