In one of the Jataka tales, the Bodhisattva is born as the King of Koshala, a ruler deeply loved by his people. His kingdom prospers, his subjects live in harmony, and his reign is marked by wisdom and virtue. Yet among all his qualities, one stands above the rest—his extraordinary capacity to generate prosperity, not only for himself but for the entire land.

One night, while resting in deep sleep, the king recalls a distant previous life. The memory moves him so profoundly that he begins repeating a strange phrase to his subjects: “All this prosperity comes from a small portion of gruel.” The words puzzle everyone. Courtiers whisper, citizens wonder, but none dare question him—until the queen, moved by both concern and curiosity, gently asks him to explain.

The king then reveals the memory that awakened him. In that earlier life, he was not a king at all, but a poor servant struggling to survive. Life was harsh, resources were scarce, and despair often crept into his heart. One day, a group of wandering monks passed by his humble dwelling. With no wealth to offer and barely enough food for himself, he nevertheless invited them in and shared the only thing he had—a small portion of gruel.

That single act, offered without expectation and with a pure heart, became the seed of his future abundance. From that simple generosity flowed merit powerful enough to shape his rebirth as a great king. The lesson, he explained, was clear: no act of kindness is ever small when it arises from sincerity and compassion.

Inspired by their king’s words, the people of Koshala developed deep respect for generosity and wholesome action. As giving spread through the hearts of the people, prosperity spread through the kingdom even more abundantly.

Thus, from a small portion of gruel, a great flourishing was born—reminding us that true wealth begins with an open heart.
