In one of the earliest Jataka tales, the Bodhisattva is born into a family of Brahmans known for purity, discipline, and spiritual devotion. Gifted with sharp intellect and deep wisdom, he becomes a respected scholar and teacher. Yet knowledge and recognition hold no attraction for him. Renouncing comfort, wealth, and status, he retreats into the forest to live the life of an ascetic, devoted entirely to inner awakening.
It is there, in the quiet wilderness, that he encounters a heartbreaking sight—a tigress, weak and emaciated after giving birth, lying helpless with her newborn cubs. Starving and desperate, she is on the verge of devouring her own young in order to survive. There is no food anywhere, no means to save both mother and cubs.
Moved by boundless compassion and free from attachment to his own body, the Bodhisattva makes an extraordinary choice. Without hesitation, he offers his own life so that the tigress and her cubs may live. His act is not driven by impulse or despair, but by clear awareness and selfless love—placing the suffering of others above the preservation of self.
The story reminds us that true compassion knows no limits. It asks not what is convenient or safe, but what is needed. In the Bodhisattva’s sacrifice, we see the perfection of generosity—dāna parami—where giving is complete, free of fear, expectation, or self-interest.
It is a powerful reminder that the path to awakening is paved not only with wisdom, but with courage, kindness, and an open heart.
