Osho once shared a deeply touching story about a fisherman and a bag of stones. Early one morning, before sunrise, the fisherman went to the riverbank to begin his day. In the darkness, he felt something beneath his feet—a small sack filled with stones. He picked it up casually and sat down to wait for dawn.
With nothing else to do, he lazily took a stone from the sack and tossed it into the river. Then another. And another. One by one, he threw them away, unaware of what they truly were.
As the sun slowly rose and light spread across the river, only one stone remained in his hand. In the daylight, his heart nearly stopped. What he held was not an ordinary stone, but a precious gem. In horror, he realized that the entire sack had been filled with gems, and in the darkness of ignorance, he had thrown them all away.
He wept in anguish, overwhelmed by the loss. Yet, in a strange way, he was still fortunate—the light had come before he had thrown away the very last gem.
Osho reminds us that this is the story of most human lives. We live in inner darkness, unaware of the immense treasure that life is. Time slips by, and we waste our days in trivialities, distractions, and unconscious habits. By the time awareness dawns, much of life’s richness—its mystery, its bliss, its depth—has already been thrown away.
Many are not even left with a single gem in their hands when the light finally comes.
Life itself is a vast treasure trove. Every moment carries the potential for awakening, love, and freedom. The tragedy is not that life is short, but that we live it without awareness.
This Morning Muse is a gentle call to wake up before it is too late—
to recognize the gem already in your hand,
and to stop throwing away the priceless moments that remain.
