Morning Muse 158 : The Invisible Hand of Grace

Arjuna triumphed not through skill alone, but through unseen divine protection — while Karna stood in battle with nothing but courage. Krishna later revealed that Arjuna’s chariot survived only through grace, not might. The story reminds us that behind every success lies an invisible support — divine, universal, or unseen — and humility is the true victory.

In the heart of Kurukshetra, where destiny breathed through dust and steel, two of the greatest archers faced each other — Arjuna and Karna. Their arrows clashed like thunder meeting flame; each stroke carried courage, karma, and the echo of fate. Even the gods, it is said, paused in silence.

With every strike from Arjuna, Karna’s chariot rolled back many feet. The world marvelled at Arjuna’s power. When Karna’s arrow struck in return, Arjuna’s chariot moved too, though only slightly. Yet Krishna — calm, watching, eternal — smiled each time Karna’s arrows landed.

At day’s end, pride stirred quietly within Arjuna.
“Lord,” he asked, “why do you praise Karna? My arrows push his chariot back so far, yet you have never applauded me.”

Krishna’s smile deepened — soft, knowing.
“Arjuna, your chariot bears Hanuman upon its flag, Sheshnag beneath its wheels, and I hold the reins. Even then, Karna’s arrows shake it. He fights alone — without divine favour, without protection, without fortune. When his arrow moves this chariot even an inch, it is an act of unmatched valour.”

When the war was won and silence replaced war-cries, Krishna refused to descend from Arjuna’s chariot before him. Only when Arjuna stepped down did Krishna follow — and in that moment, the chariot burst into flames and collapsed into ash.

Gently He said,
“Arjuna, this chariot was destroyed long ago by Karna’s arrows. I held it together only until the purpose was fulfilled.”

Then His words became an eternal truth:

“Do not claim as yours what grace has given. Every victory, every breath, every step forward — is not the self, but the Self, moving through you.”

Reflection

Behind every triumph stands an unseen hand. Talent may draw the bow, but the strength, the moment, and the outcome belong to something higher. The wise succeed with gratitude — never pride — for grace is the charioteer of all victories.
