Morning Muse 145 : The Five Treasures You Already Have

Buddha taught that true wealth isn’t measured in possessions but in generosity. Even someone with nothing still holds five priceless treasures—a smile, kind eyes, gentle words, a loving heart, and helping hands. A small act of kindness can brighten a life and deepen your own. When you give from the heart, you are never poor. Begin with your first treasure: your smile.

Once, a very poor man came to Buddha and asked,
“Master, why am I so poor?”

Buddha looked at him with compassion and replied,
“You are poor because you do not practice generosity. You do not practice charity.”

The man was shocked.
“How can I be generous?” he said. “I have nothing to give.”

Buddha smiled gently and said,
“You have five treasures within you—far more precious than gold or silver—and you can share them freely.”

“First,” Buddha said, “you have your face. Share your smile with others. It costs nothing, yet it can brighten a stranger’s day, ease someone’s pain, or spark hope where there is none. A genuine smile is pure magic.”

“Second,” he continued, “you have your eyes. Look at people with kindness and warmth. Let your gaze convey care and compassion. A loving look can lift a weary heart and make someone feel seen and valued.”

“Third, you have your mouth. Use it to speak gently and truthfully. Say words that comfort, encourage, and uplift. Speak of good things—your voice can be the light that guides someone through their darkness.”

“Fourth,” Buddha said, “you have your heart. It holds endless love, empathy, and goodwill. Even silently wishing happiness for others sends out waves of kindness that touch lives in ways unknown.”

“And finally,” Buddha added softly, “you have your body. With it, you can serve, help, and uplift. A helping hand, a small act of service, even a moment of care—these are the purest forms of charity.”

The poor man bowed his head in understanding.
He realized that real wealth does not come from possessions, but from compassion, kindness, and the willingness to give.

A small gesture—a smile, a kind word, a helping hand—can light up someone’s world.
And when you give from the heart, you will never be poor.

Begin today by sharing your first treasure: your smile.
