A wealthy man lost all his fortune in the stock market. Overcome by grief and fear, he felt life had lost all meaning and even contemplated ending it. Concerned friends brought him to a saint. Falling at the guru’s feet, the man broke down, pouring out his misfortune.
The saint listened patiently and then said, “Son, life is a mixture of joy and sorrow—like two sides of a coin. Now tell me, what was the happiest moment of your life?”
The man thought for a moment and replied, “When I topped my class in the 10th standard exams. I was overjoyed.”
The saint asked, “Did you have the wealth you’ve now lost back then?”
The man smiled faintly. “Not at all. My father was a schoolteacher. We lived simply, yet happily.”
The guru smiled and said, “You see, happiness never depended on wealth or possessions. Just as you were happy then, you can be happy now. Health, presence, and simplicity are blessings often overlooked. Life is unpredictable—cherish what you have.”
He continued, “Life tests us like a sapling in the soil. It endures trimming, manure, and storms, yet grows stronger and bears fruit. Like the lotus that blooms beautifully in the mud, we too can rise above difficulties without letting them stain our minds. Every setback is an opportunity to grow.”
Finally, the saint said, “Keep your money in your pocket, not in your mind. Success and failure are temporary. View life from a higher perspective, trust the Supreme, and live each moment fully. Happiness is not a balance sheet—it’s a state of mind.”
