There once lived a wealthy businessman who had a fun-loving but lazy son. The father wanted his boy to grow into a responsible man — someone who understood the dignity of labour and the value of money. So one day, he told his son, “Go out and earn something today. If you fail, you won’t get dinner.”
Frightened, the boy ran to his mother, who, out of love, secretly gave him a gold coin. That evening, when his father asked what he had earned, the boy presented the coin. Smiling, the father said, “Throw it into the well.” Without a thought, the boy obeyed. The wise father knew instantly — the coin hadn’t been earned by him.
The next day, the same thing happened with a rupee his sister gave him. Again, the boy threw it away without hesitation. But on the third day, with no one left to help, he had no choice but to work. A shopkeeper asked him to carry a heavy trunk. The task left him drenched in sweat, his body aching, his back sore.
That evening, when he brought home two rupees, his father once again asked him to toss them into the well. This time, the boy clutched the coins tightly, tears in his eyes.
“Father,” he said, “my whole body aches. I cannot throw away my hard-earned money.”
The father smiled knowingly and replied, “Now you understand — only what you earn through your own effort has value. That is why wasting it hurts.”
From that day on, the boy changed. He grew into a hardworking young man, ready to take responsibility for his life and his father’s wealth.
Some of life’s deepest lessons are learned only when we walk the hardest paths. True worth is felt only when it is earned through sweat, effort, and sincerity.
